Given the monikers "Wunderkind" and "bold composer" by her mentor, Hollywood film composer Roger Neill, Sophia J. Bass is an award-winning American film composer, orchestrator and conductor. She is also a vocalist, tabla player and pianist. A native of Illinois, she received her bachelor’s degree in Ethnomusicology for Composition at Oberlin College and Conservatory and her master’s degree in Composition for Screen at the Royal College of Music in London. Her work spans film and concert music and she has worked with independent artists, film directors and notable organizations, including PHLOX Ensemble: Students for Gender Inclusivity in Music, The New World Symphony: Bass Players for Black Composers, the Manila Symphony Orchestra and The Michigan Philharmonic. In 2020, Bass was awarded a prestigious Fulbright-Nehru research grant to study Hindustani classical music and tabla performance under notable tabla player Dr. Udayaraj Karpur and Carnatic violinist, Dr. Mysore Manjunath. Among her musical works is an essay written based on interviews she conducted in 2024 with Academy Award winning film composer Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) titled "Exploring Dreamworld: A Conversation with Howard Shore". Bass has continuously expanded her artistic horizons in film music and conducting for film. Her catalog bridges diverse acoustic and electronic landscapes, featuring commissions such as Piece for Solo Cello for cellist Angelique Montes’ album Refractions — a 10-minute experimental piece that incorporates the structural elements of Indian classical composition and borrows from the traditional Tabla solo and Raag in Hindustani (North Indian) classical music — a solo double bass work based on the Hindustani Raag Des following the form of a Hindustani vocal piece or bandish — and other scores for various independent films in the U.S., U.K. and China. Her international work has grounded her in a commitment to human-made music, global musical traditions, gender inclusion, and cultural representation. Bass approaches composition as a vehicle for deep emotional, spiritual and human connection, combining rigorous classical and cinematic orchestration and counterpoint with rich world-music influences.
